Debate info and participants:
Richard Carrier and Mike Licona will be debating over the resurrection of Jesus on February 11 at Washburn University in Topeka. Full details on the event are posted at Carrier's blog (http://richardcarrier...)

While Richard Carrier doesn't have the name recognition of, say, Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris, he is in my opinion, a better, more interesting writer. He wrote my favorite book on atheism (and I've read quite a number), which I highly recommend reading - "Sense and Goodness Without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism". In it, Carrier builds and defends an entire naturalistic worldview in clear and methodical manner.

I'm not familiar with Mike Licona, but I understand that he was interviewed by the infamous Lee Strobel for one of Strobel's "Case for..." books. Licona also co-wrote a similarly-titled but differently-styled book with Gary Habermas, called "The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus". So I'm guessing Licona will at least be somewhat familiar to the Christian crowd.

Carpool info:
I am trying to organize a carpool for anyone from the Wichita area who would like to go. Besides posting it here at our meetup site, I will also be emailing a number of student groups that might be interested in joining in. That includes the WSU atheist group, and some Christian campus organizations. With any luck, we should be able to get a good mix of people, which is certain to add some interesting road conversations on top of what should be a good debate from Carrier and Licona.

Anyone who is interested in going with us, but not interested in joining Meetup.com can email me directly at [masked] .

The debate starts at 7:00 PM, and our carpool will leave Wichita at 4:15 sharp, so you'll need to be at the meetup location before that. There isn't yet a location set. We'll be departing from my apartment; I'll email the address and directions to everyone at 3:00 PM, so watch your inbox. We will likely get back sometime around midnight.

Tuesdays, Thursday and Saturdays I normally have another commitment at that hour. Would love to hear this debate, but alas, not to be. Have fun!

Who attended?

  • 2 attendees
    •  Turnout was bigger than I expected. I'd estimate 400. Both participants gave good talks. Of course, Carrier had reality on his side. I learned a couple new things.
