Author/filmmaker Randy Olson at Exploration Place

Update: Note the slight start time change.

Randy Olson, author of Don't Be Such a Scientist: Talking Substance in an Age of Style, and documentary filmmaker for Flock of Dodos: The Evolution-Intelligent Design Circus, will be speaking at Exploration Place, Friday, September 10 at 7:15. There will also be a book signing beforehand, from 6:00 to 7:00.

The event is free and open to the public. Exploration Place has so far refused to provide any promotion. It's not even listed on their calendar. Such is the sad state of affairs that remains for basic science in Kansas. Olson's presentation of the political controversy between science and religion is one of the gentlest you'll ever find, but that is still too much for many Kansans.

Randy's presentation will start at 7:15 approximately. I hope we can get a good turn-out for this to show Exploration Place that there are many in the community that value real science.

We really enjoyed it! It was refreshing to see the number of attendees that were present, and it was great seeing Dr. Olson's mother, as well! Although I understand Dr. Olson's position on "storytelling" as an avenue to educate the public, I don't necessarily agree that it's appropriate for every situation. In my opinion, some things need to be very factual and straightforward, and not full of hyperbole at every turn.

Very fascinating discussion. His talk (and book) focus on how the scientific community needs to 'fix' the way it speaks and presents it's material...so the average citizen will not only understand, but be interested. very enjoyable! Thanks AU for making this happen!
