I saw a news item from KSN this past week, in which the Kansas legislature is considering levying taxes on churches and other non-profits in order to help ameliorate our revenue shortfall: http://www.msnbc.msn....

Not that it has a chance of going anywhere, but it was a nice surprise to see it even brought up.

If we apply for non-profit status can we avoid paying taxes for any of our expenses? No tax for our meals, or trips?

I get the impression that your suggestion was made in jest, but I went ahead and looked it up anyhow. The last section of that first paragraph is pretty interesting. Even considering this motion is unlikely to go anywhere, It'd be nice if the restrictions on political activity were more thoroughly applied.

I'm not entirely sure what all would be tax free if we were granted non-profit status. Donation would be tax writeoffs, for sure. And maybe if the organization purchased food directly, that would not be taxed.

ETA: I see Betty actually went and did some legwork, while I merely pondered from my armchair. biggrin
